Until recently, things were looking dire for a big-screen adaptation of BioShock. Director Gore Verbinski stepped away from the project due to budgetary concerns, leading many to believe that the project had been deep-sixed.

But now, Universal is in talks with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the director of 28 Weeks Later and the Spanish thriller Intacto.

The new director comes with a change in the movie’s shooting location. In June, Verbinski told the LA Times that it was Universal’s decision to move the movie’s production overseas and score a tax break that inspired him to back down from the project.

Since the Pirates of the Carribean director had already committed to direct the new Johnny Depp vehicle Rango here in the States, he said he didn’t want to wind up overseas for a couple years.

Fresnadillo, accustomed to working in Europe, doesn’t share the same qualms. Variety reports that Verbinski will stick around to produce the film.
习惯了在欧洲工作的Fresnadillo则无此顾虑。Vatrety报道称维宾斯基还将留下担当此片制作。
One of the most interesting details from the new report is the fact that Take-Two, publisher of the videogame, has the right to nix any director they don’t approve of.

In Hollywood, they call that part of the deal the “Uwe Boll clause.”
