Pre-E3 2009: Exclusive Sims 3 iPhone Hands-On
Do the Sims survive the move to the smallest screen?
May 29, 2009 - If there's one thing I cannot get enough of in videogames, it is inadvertent humor. In EA Mobile's The Sims 3for iPhone, the Sims speak in their typical gibberish that is alsoaccompanied by a word balloon with an object inside of it, such as acar or fish. When my Sim Bubba told a flirty joke to Ruth, a corncobappeared over his head. Saucy.
But it's that kind of silliness that has made the Sims such a smashover the years. The Sims 3 on iPhone at first looks like a strippeddown version of the upcoming PC release of the same name, but afterseveral hours of play, the game appears not to be a distillation, butjust an entirely different way to get a Sims experience. You stillcreate your Sim and imbue it with a personality. You still get a job.You still learn skills. You still socialize with other Sims and hope toone day lay down with at least one of them. But this iPhone editionjust makes it easier to squeeze time with your Sim into a short gamesession for playing on the go or during those stolen moments found in abusy day.
At the start of the Sims 3, you create your Sim with an easy-to-usetool. You select the gender, hair color, eye color, clothing, etc. Thenyou dig into the Sim's personality, which is constructed from a set oftraits. You select five traits from a list the includes both positiveand negative personality tweaks. Then, you select an overarchingpersona for your newly created Sim. Here's where you really affect thecourse of the game. You can choose a basic Jack of all Trades, or tryout something a little off-kilter such as the Maniac (one of his lfegoals: watch 3 other Sims sleep -- creepy) or the Sleaze, who wants tohave WooHoo with multiple Sims in town.
It's business time.
From there, the game has a purposefully loose structure. You aresupposed to be guiding this life. You select what job they take atlocations like city hall or a science facility. You approach Simsaround town -- the park, the general commerce area, near their homes --and start conversations to build friendships... and maybe more.However, your Sims will give you little nudges now and then that letyou know if they have a particular desire. These are wishes. There are73 of them in the game and they range from wanting a promotion at workto catching a particular type of fish to learning a new recipe. YourSim can hold on to several wishes at a time, stacked neatly in a smallpanel on-screen.
Your persona affects the wishes, too. Each persona has two or threewishes associated with it, such as the Maniac desiring to watch threepeople sleep. Personas also affect the kinds of interactions you canhave with other Sims. While each Sim has a set number of conversationoptions to try with other Sims, such as chat or tell joke, somepersonas have exclusive interactions. Again, the Maniac can fulfill hissocial needs by talking to a tree.
Socializing with other Sims is half of the adventure here, itseems. To initiate a conversation, you tap on a Sim and confirm thatyou want to talk to them. Once the conversation starts, you have a menualong the right side of the screen that shows the different options.Each option, such as humor, digs deeper into a sub-menu with anassortment of actions. If you select humor, you can then choose to tella joke, make a silly face, or goof around. If the other Sim isreceptive to your action, your relationship grows, which is measured byan on-screen meter. Successful actions color the edge of the currentrelationship status (acquaintance, friend, partner, etc.) green. Whenthe border is full, you move up to the next level of the relationship.
This is how I got Ruth into bed with Bubba: After talking to her onthe street outside the market, I started the conversation with apleasant greeting. Bubba told a joke and made a face. Ruth wasreceptive to this. (Much more receptive than that grumpy-puss Jake inthe park.) After raising our relationship to friend status, Bubba tolda flirty joke. Ruth did not recoil, so he kept going. To further stokethe fires, over the course of a few days, Bubba invited Ruth over tohis house via the phone where he kept flirting and used additionalromantic actions like kisses and hugs. When Ruth was finally up tobeing a partner, Bubba selected WooHoo. And WooHoo was indeed made.
Outside of the social experience, the Sims 3 on iPhone is also something of a resource management game. Sims have needs like hungerand cleanliness, so you need to make sure you balance enough time totake showers and eat while doing other things like going to work andshopping. Getting a job is as simple as walking up to one of the fourcareer buildings and accepting a gig. To keep a job, you need to showup at the place at the specified time. Each day drops cash in youraccount. Occasionally, I got random incidents associated with Bubba'sscience job. One of them was the chance to turn in a co-worker thatBubba saw stealing. However, it turns out the co-worker was just doingan errand and Bubba's false accusation cost him his job. Fortunately,the city hall was hiring.
The money made from a job often goes back into your house, whether it is buying food to stock the fridge or purchasing new items for yourpad. You start out with the basics -- toilet, shower, bed, fridge --but as you make money, you can purchase better items for your differentrooms or expand your house. Expanding adds a room and installsgardening patches outside of the house. Buying objects is easy througha scrolling catalog and you can customize each item with differentcolors and looks to really make your house unique.
Activities like cooking are done through minigames.
There are a handful of minigames inside Sims 3 for differentactivities, such as fishing, repairing broken items, and cooking. Theseseem relatively minor. The cooking game, for example, has you tappingpots on the stove and shaking the iPhone so nothing burns. To repair abroken item, you must remove the faulty elements of a circuit board andreplace them from a collection of new parts before time is up.Successfully completing minigames ups the skill associated with it.
One feature not found in Sims 3 right now is in-game commerce, something that EA Mobilesaid would be a part of it once Apple launched the 3.0 update.Apparently EA Mobile is still on course to add in-game purchasing toSims 3 in the near future so you can buy special items and clothes.However, without some sort of online component, I wonder how usefulthat will seem to gamers. Why buy a unique outfit, for example, if I amgoing to be the only person that really sees it?
During my play time, I was struck by just how much is going on inSims 3. The little town is not static. There are multiple Sims runningaround with different personalities that react to your Sim's activitiesand persona in different ways. I'll be diving deeper into the game enroute to a full review when the game debuts on the App Store next weekon June 2.
