Those who’ve played the Might & Magic series will find that King’s Bounty: The Legend is oddly familiar. The game takes place in the fantasy world of Endoria, a land complete with treasure, enemies, weapons, quests and a variety of races. Your hero will travel throughout this land, accepting quests from NPC’s, leading an army, and generally having an old-fashioned good time (i.e., saving the world). It’s also somewhat reminiscent of the original King’s Bounty, which was released by New World Computing in 1990.

King’s Bounty: The Legend describes itself as a RPG adventure with tactical battles and for those who do recall the original game, it seems that King’s Bounty: The Legend has improved greatly on the adventure and RPG elements of the original. King’s Bounty: The Legend, is, in part, designed to fill the dire lack of RPGs for PC, and has been compared to the Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem series. Rather than a remake of the original King‘s Bounty game, King’s Bounty: The Legend is a contemporary upgrade for a new generation. Considering the fact that the original game was released the same year my younger sister was born, this is definitely a good thing - so what does this new game have in store?

Developed by Katauri Interactive, Kings Bounty: the Legend mixes RPG adventure with more tactical, turn-based combat. During battles, the player controls an army of strange creatures, moving over a grid made of hexagons. Your army improves as your leadership stat does. Although your hero does not appear to directly participate in battles, he can summon creatures and give other aid to his allies.

Your hero can choose from three different roles: Warrior, Paladin, or Mage, each with it’s own collection of abilities. For instance, warriors will be able to build a larger army and utilise a larger variety of weapons. Mages, on the other hand, will build a smaller, more skill-based army, while the Paladin offers a mix between the two, as well as being more skilled at fending off the undead.

My first impression of the King’s Bounty: The Legend battle system likened it to a game of chess. Big, shiny, tough, sparkly, flashy, pointy-thing chess. With swords. In other words, it looks like fun, particularly for fans of other tactical games.

Battle arenas are now more interactive, with arenas coming in a variety of shapes and sizes. Like in other tactical games such as Vandal Hearts II or Disgaea, assaulting a castle, for instance, will vary dramatically from a battle in a meadow or on a ship. You will also find objects such as treasure chests, traps, altars with penalties or bonuses, hostile creatures, or various obstacles.
Units can will also be able to acquire greater skills and specific features to give battles a greater tactical aspect. Your hero can command up to five squads, and while he summons Rage spirits and casts spells, his parameters, skills and totems will influence the units. Speaking of Rage spirits, this is one of the new features you will find in King’s Bounty: The Legend. In the beginning of the game, your hero will receive an artefact containing four creatures who can be summoned while fighting. Much like summon spirits in Final Fantasy X or VIII, each Rage Spirit can gain skills and levels to help you in battle. However, calling them will cost your character Rage points, so it is best to use them wisely.

The graphics of the game don’t look particularly impressive, but then, they don’t claim to be. So far, the graphics don’t look any more advanced than, say, Might & Magic VIII, a game released eight years ago. That said, the Might and Magic series looked pretty good for its time, and the sheer size of the game helps to offset this. The world contains a huge variety of locations, from elf-filled forests to snow-capped mountains, and even the belly of a large fish. There are lava lakes, dungeons, ancient treasuries, pirate islands, deserted graveyards, worlds of demons and death, a magic labyrinth of Time, dragon caves, and a flying city.

There’s a ton of places to explore throughout the gameworld; however, the plot of the game is essentially linear, with no multiple endings. It seems that the actual plot will take around twenty hours to complete. In order to fully explore the world, the player will need to talk to NPCs and take on a multitude of side quests. The game is said to be packed with them, and it is only through these side quests that you will fully enjoy everything the game has to offer.
遊戲世界裡有成打的地方可以去探索, 然而遊戲的進展基本上是單線制的, 沒有多重結局. 單就主線劇情來說, 大約12個小時便可以完成, 為了要探索到整個世界, 你必須要找NPC聊天, 以便拿到其他的支線任務. 遊戲其實可以說是塞滿了這些支線任務, 也唯有透過他們你才能完整的享受到遊戲裡的一切.
Real-time RPG!
即時的角色扮演

Another interesting element of the game is the fact that it takes place in real time. As your hero moves around, completes plot points and takes part in side quests, enemies will be moving of their own accord, rather than waiting for you to come to them. Day will change to night, and presumably, the date will change, allowing for certain quests to be available only at given times.

King’s Bounty: The Legend seems like a mixed bag of all sorts of interesting and entertaining qualities, but only time will tell whether the linear gameplay will prove a boost or a hindrance to the concept. RPG players are usually dead against linear plots in their games, voting instead for free-roaming adventures. Still, the tactical combat and and other treats that this game will offer may well prove an entertaining ensemble.
國王的恩賜: 傳奇似乎是個所有娛樂要素集於一身的產物, 但是時間將證明單線式的劇情會於遊戲內容會是阻力還是助力. 角色扮演遊戲玩家們總是比較喜歡自由到處探險的劇情, 而非是單線式的劇情. 儘管如此, 策略型的戰爭及遊戲裡的其他亮點也許會給遊戲的娛樂效果帶來一個強有力的證明.
