The GDI Harvester

GDI 矿车


The GDI Harvester has 7,500 hp and a machine gun mounted on it. Its machine gun can kill Attack bikes reasonably well. Unfortunately attack bikes, out range the machine gun. However, if the situation becomes desperate you can charge your harvesters towards the bikes. The machine gun is also good at killing infantry too. As such they can be used as an anti infantry unit should the need arise, but remember it is generally better put to use gather Tiberium.

The Nod Harvester

The Nod Harvester has 5,000 hp and has its own cloaking device. It has a tendency to stop on a Tiberium patch, move forward a bit, and then start harvesting the Tiberium patch. This can leave you with kind of a chequered Tiberium field and your Harvester will likely start to wonder far away from the Refinery, even though there is Tiberium close to it. Be sure to watch for this and to tell your Harvester to harvest Tiberium that is near the Refinery.

You can use the Decoy Army support power on your Harvesters, giving you a stealthed scouting unit for only 500 credits. Since the Nod harvester is stealthed, it can sneak up on infantry and run over them, though be aware it will un-steath once it gets close to infantry. Using the Nod harvester like this should be more of a last resort, than anything else. Remember the Nod harvester has low health and should be repaired if it is heavily damage else a simple pitbull may kill it easily.

The Scrin Harvester

The Scrin Harvester has 7,500 hp and can regenerate when in Tiberium. Unlike the other two harvesters the Scrin harvester does not take much damage from a Catalyst Missile. Although its effect on Tiberium may cause some light damage.

Scrin 的矿车拥有7500的血量,并且在泰矿上可以自动恢复(=004=)。与其他两种矿车不同的是,催化炸弹对矿车造成的伤害很小,尽管它对泰矿的连锁反应会对矿车造成轻微的伤害。

The Scrin harvester unlike its rivals, hovers and as such can not crush infantry, nor reverse move. Since Scrin harvesters can regenerate in Tiberium, as such harassment of these units is more difficult, because if the harassment force does not kill the harvester in the first wave, it will likely be healed by the time a second wave is launched.

Scouting & Defence

To prevent losing harvesters try to scout the local area, so that you can see enemy forces coming early. If you do see some bikes for example coming, simply reverse your harvesters back towards your base. The Nod harvester is greatest at risk, if there are detector units about, as it has the lowest hp of all the harvesters.

If the harassment force follows your harvesters in, try to dance them around buildings using reverse move to try and avoid taking a few hits before reinforcements arrive. If the enemy is about to attack your base, which just so happens to be beside a Tiberium field, move your harvesters away. As most players will easily kill a few harvesters before turning to take on your army and base defences.

如果骚扰部队跟着你的矿车攻进来,在援兵到来前,试着让你的矿车倒退着绕着建筑物行进,以避免受到更大的伤害。如果你的敌人打算攻打你在泰矿旁边的基地,那么赶快把你的矿车移开。因为大多数玩家在攻击你的军队和防御之前,都会先消灭你的一些矿车。



An important thing to remember when using Nod harvesters, that a catalyst missile, will kill any harvester in close proximity. But even if you are not using Nod harversters, you should still move your harvesters away from Refineries or Tiberium fields when you hear the Catalyst Missile launch.

当你使用Nod矿车的时候,有件非常重要的事情你一定要记住,那就是催化炸弹可以消灭在附近的任何矿车。即使你没有使用Nod矿车,在你听到催化炸弹发射的警告时,也应该让你的矿车们离开矿厂或者矿区。

Power Offline ability

断电能力

If a refinery is ready to be built, but your under attack and don't want your harvester being attacked. Place the refinery down as you usually would, but use the power off icon to power down the structure, before it finishes its build animation. This will prevent the harvester from popping out of the refinery.

如果你正在被敌人攻击时,一个矿厂刚好造好,这时你当然不愿意矿车遭受攻击。你要做的只是把矿厂放置在你想要的地方,然后在建造动画完成前,把它断电。这样你的矿车就不会从矿场里出来。



Once the danger has passed, simply power back up the refinery , and your harvester will pop out, safe and ready to harvest Tiberium.

Wandering Harvesters

When the game enters the late game, tiberium fields are likely to become empty, forcing the harvesters to move to greener pastures. Try to keep an eye on your harvesters to prevent them from wandering towards an enemy held tiberium field.

A good example of harversters wandering is on maps like Tournament Arena and Tournament Tower, where it is likely bases are close to each other, and those harvesters have a problem telling friend from foe sometimes.

  • You want to launch a real attack elsewhere
  • You want to keep your opponent busy at several places; micro simply gets worse if you are forced to watch at several spots on the map
  • You want to be the one in charge, and let him follow you instead of the other way around
  • You want to slow down their tech tree/expansion

How to launch a successful distraction

This is something that surely needs to be addressed. People will try to worry their opponent by sending 4 or 5 units on one flank and attack with 20 on another, lets be honest, this is way too obvious and anyone even slightly witty will not fall for this; if however you make the groups 10 / 15 , you got a good chance of getting a successful attack off; at BOTH points where you’re attacking. So the group doesn't even count as distraction but also to damage him, which is even better right?

Now how would I do that?

Simple; the flexibility of the unit matters a lot. Respond quick to his actions and remove the forces from where he’s coming if he’s moving with a stronger force, you can go head-on if you think you got a chance or you really want a longer opening for your other force.

简单来说,你部队的灵活性是关键。对敌人的行动作出快速反应,让你的部队从敌人优势兵力的来路上撤走,当然如果你认为有机会或者你想为实攻部队拖延更长的时间,你也可以迎头而上。

Lets assume you want to save your "bait" units. Try to do as much damage as possible and then Reverse move back to another point on the map , map control helps in this case ( eg Tournament Arena; having both spikes or at least the bunkers there so you know you’re not running in enemy forces) . While you’re doing the first attack and see his first reaction to it , send in group 2 and attack on the other side; now if he didn’t split up himself, he’s going to either have to chase group 1 and let group 2 be and fend it off with new units (slow) , or send in all to group 2 . Most likely people tend to take everything back (especially those lazy “Select all “ / “Attack move” people (I used to be one of them, I can tell )) to group 2; come back in with group 1 again and remove or fight with group 2.

Basically this is the concept of Flanking more than Distracting, but it also applies with it, and hence theres no use to a new topic especially for flanking.

基本来说,相比扰乱敌人,这其实是两翼进攻的概念,但是它也是扰乱敌人的应用,因此,我们不会有特别的文章来专门讲述两翼进攻了。


Before engaging in a large battle, try to thin out your opponents army so that you have not only micro control, but now have firepower control.

在进入大规模战斗前,试着去削弱你的敌人,这样你不仅需要微操,还需要火力控制。

To do so, first send a few "bait" units around the flank. Cause some damage and force him to chase you. (Many people you will play simply use "Q" and attack move so you are given a major upper hand if this is the case) You want to keep the bait units alive and on the move while you attack his harvesters/army.

首先让一些“诱饵”单位在侧翼徘徊。造成一些伤害,并且让敌人追击你。(很多人都愿意采用“Q”+进攻模式的方式,那样的话,你将得到很大的优势)。在你进攻敌人的矿车和部队的同时,你还想保存你的诱饵部队的存活。

For a successful Flame tank rush, you will have the most luck if you are making a push on the front lines as well as pursuing with the Flame Tanks.

Useful combinations for Distractions

Scorpions+Scorpions (They have the speed)

Pitbulls + Predators/Apc/Rocket infantry/Snipers – Pitbulls kill of things while the other army keeps him busy (Flanking example)

Engineer/APC + Predators/Apc/Rocket infantry/Snipers - Need I say more? Capturing stuff

Scorpions + Flame tanks (Scorpions attract enemy fire; Flame Tanks blow up the base from the other side)

Let’s face it, who of the online players actually clicks each unit separately or makes patrol routes to shoot tanks in a certain order; most people just attack-move a lot and hope they shoot the right things. Meatshields can be useful against this sort of micro as well as good at protecting high-damage units with low armor.

What is a Meatshield?

It’s a unit that takes damage but has actually very few other uses than taking damages; luckily enough, in CnC 3, most of these have some sort of use at least. Here's an example, feel free to modify it for other armies.

简单来说,肉盾就是可以承受伤害,而除了承受伤害以外基本没有其他用处的单位(译者:好贴切啊。。。)幸运的是,在CnC3里,这些肉盾多多少少还是有些用处的。这里给个例子,当然也可以用别的单位来说明。




The predator and riflemen; predators are high damage dealing tanks to other tanks/buildings, however, if you send just a group of predators, they’ll be kicked rather easily, mixing and meatshields come in handy here, imagine having tons of riflemen between the preds attracting opposing scorpion/seeker/predator shots, truly absorbing the damage the predator is supposed to be getting. All the while, if you included rocketmen as well, they will get their shots off and may even absorb more opponent shells. Lovely isn’t it?

Meatshields and damage inflicting units

The perfect example of this is the avatar and scorps; what you want to do is:

  • Make sure the damage units get off their damage
  • Make sure the damage units don’t get hit but the meatshields do

Hence you send the avatars in front and let them absorb all damage and let the other units kill of the opposing forces, this is also done with Desintegrators/tripods; just send the disints in front.

Another great example is Rocket Militia and Rifle militia for Nod.

Mixing

Such an important thing in this type of game; you want your force to be mobile and cover everything, it helps a ton, e.g Predators/Snipers/Rocket infantry – You now got a army that covers Air attacks ( Rocket men) , tank attacks ( Predators/Rocket infantry) / infantry (snipers). Other ways of mixing which are very effective too are:

  • Scrin 剥夺者和三脚的组合,基本上这样的组合是剥夺者反步兵步兵,三脚反坦克

What is Map Awareness?

什么是地图意识?

Put simply, map awareness is knowing the map layout; its choke points, attack angles, and specific intricacies, and keeping these in mind as you play.

However, it tends to encompass more than just that, and is more like multitasking; keeping on top of the standard tasks of building construction, etc, while keeping an eye on your enemy's actions as well.

More often than not, it relies heavily on adequate scouting; necessary because of the need to know what is going on most important areas of the map, and tends to mean knowing what your opponent is generally going to be doing at most points in the game and being prepared to counter them, and any potential threats you will face.

If a scouting mission reveals an early game Predator spam, then you can prepare Fanatics or Disintegrators and make his attack unsuccessful and costly. Overall, the benefit is that it will make your army more efficient and increase the likelihood of your units getting promoted, and as everyone knows, promoted units are so much more useful than regular ones.

Another good reason is that it really helps with improving your micro; a quick sweep of your base can reveal damaged buildings & units that could require repair or additional defense, or show idle Harvesters or other such issues that could be sorted out, and maybe show you those Flame Tanks that otherwise would have surprised you.

It should follow that good map awareness also has a knock-on effect on macro for the simple reason that you will be more able to plan better attacks, because you will be more able to attack his weak spots and capitalise on his mistakes; at times, this can mean the difference between a win and a loss.

Distractions will also be less likely to succeed with heightened map awareness; if you are playing against Nod, for example, you can be on the lookout for stealthed assaults and keep on guard with plenty of stealth detection, and save yourself a lot of hassle in the process.

How do I get it?

  • Hit spacebar whenever you hear an announcement
  • Constantly right-click scroll
  • Hotkey your main attack group (at the very least)

It takes time, but starts with a few simple steps and will become more like second nature the more you practice. One of the first things to do would be to check your minimap constantly, and pay attention to your EVA announcements. Also hit spacebar whenever you see the minimap icon flash or hear the EVA announcement; it will save you lots of time in finding out which enemy unit is where.

It is a good idea to use bookmarks; set them up as soon as possible at key locations and use them as much as possible. With this, the use of hotkeys is essential; it will save you huge amounts of time if you are able to do this consistently, and also help you get buildings up faster; both will be considerable advantages if you're facing an opponent who isn't using them.

Watch the replays of some of the top players several times through their points of view. Watch how they scout, and watch what counters they make at which points in the match, and try to adapt and implement that into your play. In addition, watching your own replays and looking at where to improve would also be a great idea.
