Mods: If this could get sticked it could really help people.
There's been a lot of confusion, nerd-rage, yelling, and testosterone in the past few hours, and a lot of people have questions. Here is what's happening from someone who knows the gaming industry and how game releases go.
Steam does not have a midnight release because Activision "sold" the midnight release rights to Gamestop, Walmart and other box-mortar stores.
Steam did not get the bid to have an excluding midnight release, which means they have to delay their release to sometime after those midnight exclusive time.
Retail PC copies have a midnight release time because they were purchased from said box-mortar stores and not from Steam.
The reason why the date was changed so late in the game was the rights deal between Valve and Activision falling through, or from protest from those that did pay extra for the exclusive release.
Steam did not falsely advertise/lie/trick the community and buyers
There is a reason why they have the word "approximately" in the time, as it is subject to change and is not exact. Valve/Steam did not promise a midnight release.
Steam split apart release dates based on timezone to protect the content servers from high bandwidth/usage and to prevent server crash
By splitting up the releases, it alleviates some stress from the content servers to help make the release run as smoothly as possible. MW2 had this problem with it being unlocked for everyone at the same time and the content servers crashing.
tl;dr: Valve did nothing wrong.
I hope to clear some misconceptions and wonder if I can get this stickied. |
