What is Baldurs Gate Redux?
Baldurs Gate Redux (BGR) is a mod team working to recreate the Baldur's Gate experience in the Dragon Age engine
Why remake the games? Why not just replay the old games?
Because we love the Baldur's Gate games and think the idea of bringing it to life in a modern engine is dead exciting. We think fans of the game will enjoy seeing their favourite levels, characters and dialogues reimagined. And heck, we get a kick out of making it - it'll be an experience
Come on, really - Baldur's Gate was huge! How can you hope to remake it?
By being realistic in our goals - remaking what made baldurs gate great and cutting corners where they do not detract from the experience of the game. We are releasing in modular form, so what we get finished will be playable.
So how much of Baldur's Gate are you remaking at the moment?
We're starting out with creating the Irenicus' dungeon opening section of Baldur's Gate 2. How we progress from there will depend on how that project goes.
The Baldur's Gate game is copyrighted, is that a problem?
Our mod will make use of an installer that extracts text and audio from a full Baldurs Gate install, thus preventing the need to distribute this copyrighted content. The likenesses of characters and levels are derivative works inspired by the original artwork. This not-for-profit mod recognises Atari and Wizards of the Coast as copyright holders of the Baldur's Gate games.
So will I need a copy of the Baldur's Gate games to play BGR mods?
Absolutely. Our first mod, covering Irenicus' Dungeon will require a full install of Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. You'll also need Dragon Age: Origins for PC. There is no technical reason it shouldnt work on Mac, but we won't be extensively testing on Mac.
What will the gameplay be like? Will you be doing a complete D&D rules conversion?
We will not be spending time reproducing the Dungeons and Dragons rules - if another modder comes up with a D&D rules conversion we will investigate integrating it into the mod. Otherwise, you can look forward to using the Dragon Age core gameplay but with familiar spells, abilities and classes similar to the major D&D classes.
How long before the first mod is ready?
We hope to complete Irenicus' Dungeon some time in 3rd quarter 2010.
