当地时间6月19日晚，阿森纳官方宣布，阿贾克斯队长托马斯·维尔迈伦正式加盟球队。据英国媒体报道，阿森纳为他支付了约1000万英镑的转会费。

今年23岁的维尔迈伦上个赛季是阿贾克斯的队长，18岁时即代表阿贾克斯参加荷甲联赛。效力阿贾克斯期间，维马尓伦获得1次荷甲冠军（2003-04赛季），两次荷兰杯冠军（2006年和2007年）及两次荷兰超级杯(2006年和2007年）。2006年3月上演处子秀后他已经代表比利时国家队出场21次，成为球队的主力中卫。作为一名优秀的左脚将，维马尓伦既能踢中卫，也能踢左边后卫，对于阿森纳来说，这无疑十分重要。

阿森纳主教练温格对于能签下这名超级新星表示高兴：“对于阿森纳俱乐部来说，能签下托马斯是一笔不错的买卖，我们所有人都为他加盟而高兴。他在欧冠联赛和联盟杯比赛中积累了丰富经验，同时也是比利时国家队不可或缺的球员。”

维马尓伦说：“离开阿贾克斯很令人伤心，我感谢队里的每个人，我很高兴加盟阿森纳，这是一个伟大的俱乐部，所有的事情都很完美，我知道这是一个可以获得荣誉的球队，所以我来了。我向往的是冠军杯，这也就是我来阿森纳想要经历的事情，我也很喜欢英超比赛，我保证我会将自己的一切献给阿森纳，下赛季去赢得所有的荣誉。”

Fernando Torres believes he can lift both the Barclays Premier League and the Champions League during his Liverpool career and help emulate the club's "winning tradition".

The 25-year-old - who agreed a new contract with the Reds last month - is certain he can satisfy his desire for silverware at Anfield and is determined to write himself into the Kop history books.
  
"Winning the European Championship with Spain gave me a taste of what winning at the top level was like and once you've had a taste of success it becomes an addiction," said Torres.
  
"A lot of players committed themselves to Liverpool this summer with new contracts and players don't do that unless they think they can have their ambitions met.
  
"There is a lot of belief at the club and a lot of trust in the manager. I sincerely believe I will win the Premier League and the European Cup here.
  
"The winning tradition is very clear at Liverpool. I want to be involved in a little piece of their history."
  
The Reds beat off strong competition from other members of Europe's elite to land Torres from Atletico Madrid in July 2007.
  
The Spain international is adamant he would not have left Atletico for any club other than Liverpool and insists he sees his long-term future on Merseyside.
  
"It was hard for me to leave Atletico," he admitted. "It was where I grew up and I have lost count how many times I have said I would only have left them for Liverpool.
  
"I'm very excited about what the boss is doing here at Liverpool. We came close last season and, with the experience we now have, I believe we can be champions next season."
  
He added: "As long as Liverpool want me, I will stay."
