Exclusive FM2011 blog with Miles Jacobson day 19: Steam, achievements and the new Trophy Room

With Football Manager 2011 just a couple of days away from its release on Friday, it’s about time I talked about the different options for installing the game this year.
There are two ways that you can install – via Steam, and “normal” install.
The “normal” install means installing from the DVD to your computer, and requires you to keep the DVD in the drive at all times whilst playing the game.
Or you can choose to install via Steam, which gives a number of benefits. Although please note that whilst Steam is also a digital retailer, and you can buy the game direct from them, you do not have to buy the game from Steam to install through it’s system.
So what are the benefits, I hear you ask?
Firstly, with Steam you automatically get updates for the game whether they be patches or data updates, delivered through their fast bandwidth. No need to trawl around the internet waiting for an update to be released, you just get told when you boot the game that there’s an update available, and it’ll download and install it for you.
Secondly, those who install through Steam will get an extra “skin” for the game, called the retro skin. Those who installed via Steam last year will be well aware of this skin, which changes the user interface to look like one of the earlier Football Manager titles.
Then there are Steam achievements, which are exclusive to those who installed through Steam. This helps you keep track of how you are doing in the game and, err, what you’ve achieved as a manager.
There are more of these than ever before with Football Manager 2011 and the full list of all 86 achievements can be found at community.sigames.com !
This year our publisher, SEGA, have also introduced a new feature to the official website for the game at www.footballmanager.com . This is called the “Manager Trophy Room”.
The Trophy Room takes some of achievements that you are able to get if installed via Steam, and publishes them on the website using so that you can really show off to all of your mates about what you’ve achieved in the game. And you can see what it looks like in the mini-gallery above (click the full-screen view to see the grab in its full glory).
As well as all of the above benefits, if you install through Steam you are able to log onto any PC or Mac, anywhere in the world, and are able to play the game. You don’t need the disc with you, just log in via the Steam client, the game will download (if it isn’t already installed on the computer, of course) and you can start a new game, or continue a saved game if you carry one around with you.
Oh – and to beat a myth, you do not need to be online to play the game via Steam, only to install via it. Once installed, you can easily set the game to play in offline mode if you have a bandwidth cap or are on the move.
