There’s the scouting information that goes to determining the relative speed of Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson, the on-ball defensive skill of Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, or the base-running ability of Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Carl Crawford. The art direction that has to pull in the level of detail to capture all of the Denver Nugget players tattoos, Kevin Durant’s shoes, the bagginess of Manny Ramirez’s uniform, and the placement of Peyton Manning’s towel. The sound design details that assures a Carolina Panther’s first down is met with a growl, the proper bell sound greets every Dallas Maverick free throw, and the Seminole war cry sound authentic and is brought in at the proper time of a Florida State football game.

When presented this bold statement, 2K Sports’ Vice President of Marketing Jason Argent agreed. “It’s bold, but you’re right. I can’t think of anything out there more comprehensive,” He said.
He should know. 2K Sports, as well as their competitors, takes on the task of releasing sports titles that don’t just operate well as a matter of well-functioning code but realism beyond what one would have thought possible in the days of Bases Loaded and Double Dribble. And consumers take this very seriously these days. If something is missed, it’s often pointed out in a message board by a fan very quickly. If a player models don’t look up to standard, a reviewer will point it out.
The athletes may take the ratings and avatars even more serious. The virtual athletes are a recreation of them that are part of what shape their public image for many fans in this era. In Patrick Hruby’s ESPN Outside the Lines piece “The Franchise”, he cites a couple of accounts of NFL players complaining about their Madden ratings or lobbying for better ratings. Like contract dollars in salary negotiations, detail and rating translate to respect to prideful athletes.
With so much community pressure to get everything “right,” how does a company handle the tremendous demands placed upon them year in and year out? For 2K Sports, Argent taking on and meeting high expectations reaps high rewards. Keeping up with the multitude of changes year in and out for a sports isn’t an easy task he explained, but he believes two traits of the company help keep 2K Sports ahead of the game with franchises like NBA 2K.
“I think we do the best job in the business because we have a passion for the sport and a respect for the gaming community,” Argent said. “We know the demands are high, but when you meet them you really gain some brand loyalty.”

Much like role-players on a championship roster, Argent points to the dedicated efforts of teams devoted to certain aspects of the game coming together to make the whole a better product. And much like the athlete’s the 2K Sports attempts to recreate, the drive for proving oneself the best isn’t just reserve for rival studios.
“We are a competitive group everyone is pushing each other to make their respective area the best part of the game,” Argent said.
Conscious of it or not, in those efforts to make the most competitive games today developers are creating part of the historical record of tomorrow. We as gamers and critics are often thinking about the immediate. The value for now. But once the code is finished and a game is pressed to disc there is a digital recreation of the experience of today. Dwayne Wade’s shoes, the atmosphere at the Staple’s Center, the stoke and kick of a Ray Allen jumper: all these things are represented in as authentic a fashion as the development teams cranking out NBA simulations can muster in their development window.
But that is a focus on today.
The 2K Sports VP hasn’t been shy in his confidence in the NBA 2K telling CNBC back in June the company had the best NBA video game ever made. It’s probably hard containing confidence fresh of the heels of then announcing Michael Jordan’s return to video game basketball after a six year absence exclusively to NBA 2K11.
“Actually getting this done is the most ridiculous win of all-time,” Argent told CNBC.

Which begs the question of how 2K Sports managed one of the biggest sports video game coups in managing a deal with one of the most elusive and valued athletes of the past 20 years.
“Michael is big on authenticity,” Argent explained. “I think that’s why our brand and pitch appealed to him.
Those of us on the outside may never know how much of the actual deal came down to ideals versus dollars but to know anything about Jordan as a fan is to know his crafting of image and value of legacy is as legendary is his competitive spirit. So much so Jordan in his induction speech into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame infamously spent time admonishing some he felt crossed him and offended that legacy over the years. The branding of Jordan should probably be as required study for sports marketers as Jordan gametape should be for aspiring basketball talents.
So for what natural cynicism may arise from those words coming from a professional marketer, one may rest assured there’s plenty of weight to them in reference to Jordan. The plan to present a crafted recreation of highlights of Jordan’s history was not only appealing for him but long a desire of the NBA 2K team.
“This is something both we and the dev team have wanted to do for a very long time,” Argent said. “They had a plan for years on how they wanted to use Michael, thankfully we were able to make a deal happen and put the plan to work.”

Enter the well-publicized Jordan Challenge Mode which highlights ten signature moments in the career of the NBA’s most celebrated player. The feature will take player through moments such as Jordan’s rookie year 63-point drop on the Celtics in the playoffs, his 1990 shootout with “The Human Highlight Film” Dominique Wilkins, his first NBA title series knocking of Magic Johnson’s Lakers, the emotional ‘96 Father’s Day game that closed the series with the Sonics, and Jordan’s last championship win knocking off the Utah Jazz.
“We wanted to pick games that represented Jordan’s legacy,” Argent started in explaining the choosing of Jordan Challenge Moments. “We thought it would be great for that older gamer to relive those moment he/she saw when they were kids, but we also thought of it as sort of a history lesson for younger gamers that might have never seen him play, but know of him as the greatest of all time. The gamer is going to be able to play out 10 of his most amazing moments, and I think you are going to see just how amazing some of his accomplishments were.”
Argent stated that while Jordan – with his busy schedule being an NBA owner – doesn’t have the time to be involved in every phase of the development of the game and mode, he does regularly give input on where the game is going.
“He does see things for approval,” said Argent of Jordan. “So far I think we are representing his brand and legacy pretty well.”
For all the buzz, historical challenge modes are really nothing new in the realm of sports video games. There have been modes challenging players to recreate or change history in historical games for years already. And 2K Sports – as well as EA – have had historical players and teams as options for play for years. However between the Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K11 and Wayne Gretzky Challenge in EA’s NHL Slapshot, the idea of highlighting a transcendent legend to freshen that typical mode as possibly emerging trend this year. However, Argent would advise pause to anyone with the thought of this already in the books as a recurring feature in 2K Sports.
“The one thing I can tell is that we do not have, and will never have, a formula,” Argent said. “A big part of our success is our insistence upon continuing to evolve and innovate every year. I think you have to evaluate every situation and see if there is a fit. For us, this year using Michael Jordan felt like the natural fit. One thing we do know is we are always striving and pushing ourselves to be the most authentic simulation sports game on the market.”
Part of that for 2K Sports is taking full advantage of having Jordan in their game and not losing touch with the desire to live out fantasy as well as remember history. Argent sees the inclusion of the MJ: Creating A Legend mode as a way to satisfy that part of the basketball fan desire.

“Fantasy is very much so a big part of it…” he said. “The chance to put rookie Michael Jordan on any of today’s current day NBA teams is the ultimate fantasy. How many Nets, Wizards, Clippers fans out there wonder if they had Michael on their team would their NBA destiny be different. This is your chance now to answer a lot of those questions.”
Argent expressed quite a bit pride in the undertakings of the 2K Sports team. The challenge the team faces year in and out is described earlier in this piece by him as a point of passion. But there is something a little extra special it seems this year with having the rights and responsibilities of representing Michael Jordan with all he means to basketball fans and history.
“It’s a tremendous honor passing MJ’s legacy onto younger fans,” said Argent. “Basketball is in the 2K Sports brand DNA, its something we live and breathe over here. Naturally today’s youth will pick up a game for pure entertainment purposes, but its nice to think that this game will also be teaching younger fans that might not have seen Micheal play, just how special he was.”
