I'm a bit of a completionist. After playing through SoZ once, I realized I had grossly underestimated the potential of the One-of-Many encounter, as he could mathematically pay out ludicrous amounts of XP in exchange for cohorts if you do it right.
So I replayed through the game, to test my theory, and reached level 30 on my main character in a very reasonable amount of time. Here's how!
First of all, you'll need to make an Evil-aligned character and play through the game to reach level 20 normally - doing all the side quests and messing around a bit more than usual on the overland map will let you hit that 190K xp mark easily. If you play a race with ECL greater than 1, you may want to push once level higher, as youll need more experience to hit 30. You can play during this time with cohorts, with a custom party, or by yourself; it doesn't really matter, but Id recommend to level a custom party along if you don't want to be a lonely level 30 by the end, as this method involves eventually sacrificing every Cohort to One-of-Many. You also need to build up your trade empire to have a solid influx of trade bars; but you CAN and SHOULD use the "inflation" bug fix. During the game, you need to make sure to collect every cohort in the game; you cant really afford to miss any - ESPECIALLY if you have any ECL or want to keep one of them alive - so pay special attention not to miss Septimund. And of course, dont kill or feed One-of-Many before that point.
Once you have basically cleared the game, youll have a party of level 20s with a clear quest roster, a fortune in trade bars and all that. Technically, you could very well stop playing here; but this is for crazy people like me who want more. So, here it all begins.
Each time you feed a cohort to One-of-Many, you get an amount of experience thats based on the level of said cohort. Most people probably just fed them the useless cohorts they had on hand, and got a couple thousand XP for it, never thinking twice about it. However, he pays 1000XP per cohort level, divided amongst the members of your party. So we want to feed him cohorts at level 20.
No, rest at ease, you wont have to manually level up the cohorts, or else this wouldnt be a thread-worthy trick. The Adventurer's Guild at the Keep offers you a handy service; whenever a Cohort (unfortunately, wont work with custom-created characters) is below the level of your party leader, theyll catch him up instantly to your level at the low, low price of 1 gold per point of XP.
Youre looking at a tab varying between 125k to 350k gold per cohort, for a bill of about a couple million. That's roughly 130,000 trade bars; nothing you shouldn't already have if you maxed all your caravans, upgrades, and grinded on the OM a bit, but should you lack gold; idling on the OM produces trade bars fairly quickly. Dont "Rest" to speed it up however, caravans dont move when you sleep, and gold only accrues when they reach their target cities. If anything, doing this simply gave me something (very) worthwhile to do with the mountain of trade bars you are eventually swimming in even with the inflation fix.
After "Buying" level 20+ for each and every cohort, you DO have to manually hit the level up button a bunch of times to actually get them to pay out full XP. Basically, the script checks their Level and not their Experience Value to determine how much they pay out. Fortunately, with the Recommanded button, this is pretty quick.
The trick then, is to feed cohorts to One-of-Many ONE BY ONE, so that the entire XP payout goes to your main character. If you bring several cohorts at once, or fail to bank your non-cohort character beforehand, his XP payout will be split and much less worthwhile. Furthermore, by feeding him the cohorts one at a time, you'll get about a level worth of XP every time, meaning that the next cohort can be leveled even higher at the Adventurer Guild, meaning he'll pay out a bit better than the previous one.
If you start when your personal xp is 200K (A fairly reasonable target, making you start at level 20), your 11 "traded-in" cohorts should give you something along the lines of: 20K, 21K, 22k, 22K, 23K, 24K, 25K, 25K, 26K, 27K, 28K: for a total of about 265KXP. Which would bring your main character to 465K xp, the target for level 30 with ECL 1. 435K for no ECL, which could let you start at level 19 most likely.
Now, this won't level up your custom-made side kicks, so unless you plan on redoing this whole campaign several times; this trick wont give you a level 30 PARTY. You COULD choose to do the turn ins with some custom characters present, splitting the rewards amongst the group, to get a PARTY of four to level 26 instead of a character to 30 with level 20 sidekicks, but I thought the latter route fit my evil-aligned Warlock much better.
The bonus? Feeding every cohort to One-of-Many every cohort will grant you GREATER NEGATIVE AURA. AND then he will attack you, and single-handedly crushing him alone with your fresh level 30 character in a few rounds was an entirely satisfying experience, making the 11 trips between the Adventurers Guild and his random location entirely worth the trouble.
After this point of course, you can go fetch your former sidekicks and enjoy the tremendous new strength of your main character as he plows through the final boss, and, basically, get the bragging rights for hitting level 30 in a campaign meant to take you to about 18. |
