The Laptop Is Not A Laptop.
The Sakshat Laptop
India's $10 Sakshat laptop turned out not quite what we expected. First of all it was neither a laptop or $10. It's currently priced at $30 and is capable of only simple computing. The device is roughly 10 by 5 inches and functions by storing data accessed by connecting it to an actual computer. It has 2 GB of onboard memory with wireless internet connectivity. So, after all the hype in the last few days, the $10 laptop is basically a $30 storage device with network capabilities.
The device was a collaborative effort by several organizations such as the University Grants Commission, the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras, and the Indian Institute of Science. It's intended to be used similar to the One Laptop per Child's XO and the Classmate of Intel. It is designed to improve the skills of students in all levels of education. The government hopes that it will be used to download ebooks to replace textbooks in the future.
At the exhibition presented Tuesday in Tirupati, India, The government claimed that using the Sakshat, a notebook PC can be built for around $60. This increase in price is partly due to the fact the display will cost more $10, the original price of the Sakshat laptop.
Perhaps once they have a laptop put together, pricing and advertising will reflect more accurately the actual value of the product. |
