Brink really doesn't fit sustained aim though, the spread on a lot of weapons is huge, and the recoil on others is huge as well. The distances for combat and the ranged that weapons can reliably fire (that aren't tap shots or auto-burst) are really short compared to most games, and the movement isn't nearly as fast, and is much more limited. In brink it's really not hard to keep the center of your crosshair on someone, you just have to hope your spread/recoil gets a better grouping than they do. In quake you knew where your shots would go, and in CS you know where that first bullet will go, and you know how to control the spread for each weapon, in brink the bullets just go all over the place after the first couple shots with most of the autos, so you either have to get the drop on someone and spray them down close range, or you have to use a really accurate gun "long range" (I e-airquote long range because it's not really long).
The value of FPS aiming ability matters much much less in this game, making the out and out firefights less determined by the skill of either team. Yes, we get it, killing isn't nearly as important as completing objectives, except you need to clear the area of the enemy team to get close to an objective, and with such short re-spawn timers and spawns that are really close to objectives, you have to kill the enemy team several times over to complete a main objective. Killing is just as important in this game as any objective based FPS, it's just not rewarded, and the people with the better aim and FPS knowhow aren't going to be much better at it than the light running around spraying.
This isn't about the current market not liking sustained aim or objective based gameplay, it's about people not liking kills not only being not rewarded, but touted as not important when that's what gets the objective foot-in-the-door, and people not liking that because there is both high spread and in some cases high recoil after that first shot it's anyone's guess where that bullet will go, and the first bullet never downs anyone unless you're using a barnett.
It reeks of casual shooter right now, being incapacitated instead of dead with a chance of invunerable revival, low ammo amounts so people who can kill a lot are limited by the number of bullets they have, low re-spawn times so a full wipe barely hurts the team, guns that tend to be really innaccurate with high HP bars, these things really don't say "competitive FPS", even with all the great teamwork that can happen, these core mechanics level the "S" part in "FPS" artificially closing the gap between people that can and cannot shoot well, position well, and dodge well.
