Football Manager is unlike most other games in the market, as anyone who starts a new game on Football Manager gets their own unique experience. There is no set pattern to the game, no one way to play it, no time limits, and it's non-linear (unless you call time something that is linear).

FM跟市面上大部分的游戏都不一样哦,每个人都会有独特的体验。这个游戏没有固定的套路和玩法,没有时间限制,是非线性的(!@#&¥!@#%……!*@#¥)。

But surely, as we pride ourselves on our database and its accuracy, once those real players retire, the game must be over as there'd be no players left, right?

不过呃,虽然我们为精确的数据而自豪,人们会很自然地想,当现实中的球员都退役的时候,这游戏就只剩个壳了吧?

The answer to that is a simple no, and it's one of the other reasons why everyone's game is different. And the reason for the no, is what we call 'newgens', which are players that we generate inside the game to ensure that there is still a good spread of players throughout the time you are playing the game.

我们怎么会那么傻。这也是每个人的每个档都不同的原因之一。当然就是随机球员啦,你不管玩多久都可以继续的嘛。

So to let you know some of the changes we've made this year in this area, we've a two part blog written by Riz, who is the coder at SI responsible for this part of the game.

嘛嘛,就由负责这部分的Riz向你们介绍下本作在随机球员方面的改变吧。

Part one: The newgen templates

I 随机球员模板

The newly generated players, or newgens as they are often called, are created by the game each year to simulate a new generation of youth intake for the clubs. In the last few years, we have been constantly improving the modelling of these new players and for FM2011 we've again taken some big steps forward.

随机球员就是用来模拟俱乐部每年招入的青年才俊的么。过去呢,程序在这方面也是稳步提升,不过今年有重大革新哦。

The biggest new addition for the newly generated players in FM2011 is the use of newgen templates. At the start of the game, we go through all the real players in the game database and analyse what type of players there are for different positions.

最主要的变化就是使用随机球员模板了。游戏开始的时候,会翻翻数据库看每个位置上都有哪些类型的球员。

This analysis is based on how the player attributes are assigned in relation to their current level of ability, so in a way it finds different stereotypes of players regardless of the level they play at.

简单地说就是看属性分配,当然是相对于CA的。

The result of the analysis is a set of templates that gives the game a guideline on how the player attributes for different types of players should be spread out. The templates are then used when creating new players to ensure their attributes look and feel more lifelike and that the key attributes that are essential for the type of player being created are all realistic.

然后就会得到一些模板,这样后面就知道随机球员的属性该怎么分配了,这样也不会经常出现像以前那样弹跳个位数的悲剧中后卫了。

When creating the templates, we first separate players based on position so each general position has their own set of templates. The game then keeps track of how many players in the starting database match each template for each position, so the player types that are the most common amongst the researched players for a specific position will also be the most common template types used for newgens in the game for that position.

每个位置上都有几个模板,当然属于不同模板的球员数量不同,我们也会让随机人按照和现实差不多的比例分配到不同模板下。

As some player templates are closely linked to the player's physical build, such as the generic tall striker who is strong but not overly fast, we also separate the templates within each position by the general player height (short, average, tall) to make sure this connection is included in the modelling of newgens.

体型有的时候也会限制球员的类型,比如又高又快的前锋实在很少,当然我们在分配随机人的时候也会考虑这一点。

As you might expect, certain player stereotypes that the templates will be based on can be specific to a certain nation or a continent, so the templates naturally cannot be just a generic global set for all nations. This is why at the start of the game, we create a set of templates for each position for each nation with an active league selected. This results in slightly different sets of templates for the same position in different nations, depending on how the players from those nations are modelled in the game database by our researchers. And this again helps us create more lifelike newgens in the long run, as it will reflect the national characteristics of the players better.

你也觉得每个国家或者地区出来的球员不会都一个风格吧,事实上我们也考虑到了这一点呢,对开了联赛的每个国家都有不同的模板设计,当然,具体的差别是由提供数据的调查员决定的。这样随机人也能更好的反应不同国家的足球风格麽。

But what if you have just one nation active, are all the newgens created in the inactive nations going to use the same templates ? Well, no. For all the inactive nations we split the player templates into continental sets, so South American newgens will use their own templates that will be different to the ones used by European newgens for example. So even when running only a few active leagues, the newgen modelling across the game world will be enhanced.

什么?你只开一个联赛啊?没关系的,对其他的国家球员的模板呢会按洲来划分的,比如南美和欧洲的球员就会不一样,反正不会都一个德行。

When it comes to creating new players based on these newgen templates, we will first pick the suitable set of templates based on the player nationality, position and height. Then a random roll of the dice decides which one of the templates from the set will be used (as mentioned above, some templates are more common than others) and that template will then be used as a guideline to give the player his starting attributes based on his starting level of ability.

总的来说呢就是先按国家、位置、体格来给球员分个类,然后再随机选取一个合适的模板,根据这个来给随机人分配初始属性。

Naturally we still have some random factors involved to make sure not all players of the same level using the same template are exactly the same, but the basic layout of their attributes is similar. All this results in generations of improved newgens in the game world with more lifelike attributes.

当然能力差不多模板一样的随机人也不会属性都一样,总是有点差别的嘛,这样就跟真实世界比较像了。

Part two: Beyond the templates

II 其他的

Another key improvement with regards to newgens is the modelling of youth recruitment for the clubs. Previously we only had information for the club youth facilities and a possible youth academy in the database and this information was used in combination with the club reputation to decide what level of newgens would be generated for the club each year.

以前我们只是根据青训设施、足球学校和球队声望来决定球队招入的青年球员的水平。

Naturally this caused a bit of a problem in the long term games, because even though winning trophies and being a highly reputed club with state of the art youth facilities can help you lure more promising players to your youth teams, it still cannot overcome some limitations set by geographical details such as the club catchment area and the real life talent pool available around the club.

不过长期来说总是有点问题的,因为事实上不管声望什么的再高,新球员的来源总是会受到地域什么的限制。

So to better model these aspects that the club has less control over, we’re now also modelling a youth recruitment rating for the clubs in the database.

所以我们给俱乐部添了个招收青年球员的评定。

The new youth recruitment rating helps us better model small clubs with established grass roots youth systems who have a pedigree of producing players that end up moving to bigger clubs, as well as modelling the big clubs who may be well funded and have a strong first team based on players bought from elsewhere but are struggling to find quality first team players through their own youth systems.

这样就会有那些不断为大俱乐部输送人才的兵工厂,也会有自己青训稀里哗啦靠买人来打造阵容的豪门。

Clubs will naturally have less control over the youth recruitment factor as it is not entirely based on physical facilities or available personnel, but is also linked to the regional talent pool etc. However the rating is not static and if you do well enough in the game and gain more reputation for your club, the board can expand your youth recruitment networks to make the most out of the improved club stature.

因为这个跟球队所在的地区有关,球队相对来说不太容易控制,当然你成绩好声望高的话董事会总是会扩大招收面的。

With the introduction of the youth recruitment rating, we have naturally also revised the way newgen players get their potential ability calculated. The improved code has allowed us to better model the distribution of potential star players and to create more balanced youth intakes for different levels of clubs.

当然这样随机人PA也跟以前算法不一样,在新的体系下,高潜随机人的地域分布会更好点,不同水平俱乐部的招收青年球员也更平衡。

There is now also a much greater chance for the odd potential star player to start out at a lower league club only to be later on picked up by a bigger club as they start to show what they are made of. The new system also enables us to model smaller differences between clubs of similar standing when creating their youth intakes.

所以会有更多的天才球员在小俱乐部展示他们的才能之后被豪门买入。新系统也能体现相同水平的俱乐部在招收年轻球员方面的小差别。

Each year there are also numerous smaller improvements to the way newgens are created and the way they develop within the game. With regards to the development of newgens (and real players alike) we have improved the way the game keeps track of the match experience gained by the players.

每年随机人的产生和成长都会有改进,这次我们还更多地关注了球员的比赛经验(真实球员也是一样)。

This means that getting your promising young players first team action is more important than ever and loaning out players who don’t yet fit into your first team plans to get some competitive first team football a step down the ladder will be much more beneficial to their development than just playing reserve or youth team matches. And the newly revamped training module now allows AI managers to train their players more efficiently, resulting in more lifelike development.

这意味着年轻球员参加正式比赛更加重要,而租到差一点的球队去打正式比赛比扔在预备队或青年队要更有利于他们的发展。毕竟新的训练模块也让AI更有效地训练球员。

There has also been a lot of fine tuning this year to the way newgen player names are created, with a lot more variation now in the use of common names for Brazilian newgens for example. Not to mention a lot of work that has gone into improving the modelling of players turning into non-players as they age, end their playing careers and move into managing, coaching or scouting roles.

至于随机人名字的产生,也有不少微调,例如巴西随机人会更多地使用常用名的变体。另外球员退役、成为经理教练或者球探的算法也有改进。

All in all, we hope that FM2011 will again provide you with numerous memorable newgens along your careers.

一句话,我们希望随机人中也能产生真正的巨星。
