Word started getting around last week that a PC version of Gears of War would be unveiled at E3, and Epic Games—the title's developer—did indeed deliver on that front. The folks at Shacknews were on the scene at E3 and got a chance to try the game, and they've put together up a little mini-preview to relate their findings. According to the Shack, Gears of War PC is "not in a whole new visual realm" compared to the Xbox 360 version, but it does feature more detailed models and textures that contribute to an overall "tighter" look. Despite the fancier graphics, demo systems outfitted with GeForce 8800 graphics cards were reportedly able to run the game at 60 FPS at a resolution of 1920x1200.
Gears of War - PC
First off, CliffyB clarified the '5 new chapters': There are 5 ACTS in Gears of War, each with several chapters. The PC will add five new single player CHAPTERS. With that cleared up, I got a chance to play Gears of War today for PC, using the good old Mouse and KB. I don't think it's really necessary to go over the game itself, as I'm sure we all know plenty about it, so I'll just discuss the port. The PC demos were running at 1920x1200, and were easily keeping near 60 FPS. The PCs used were high end, so probably an 8800 or 1950, but nothing absurd by today's standards. GoW PC does not use any DX10 effects, so you won't get anything special there. Gears will still use checkpoint saves for the PC version with no quicksaving, as Cliffy feels the checkpoints are well spaced and quicksaving isn't really gonna help the game any. Multiplayer wise, 19 Multiplayer maps will be available in the PC version as well as the King of the Hill gametype. Games for Windows Live! will be used exclusively for Multiplayer, and the game will run on both XP and Vista. Finally, while Cliffy said that while nothing is set in stone right now, he does not expect the additional PC content to make it to the XBox 360, in order to provide some extra incentive for purchasing the PC version. So overall, don't expect anything bad from the port itself, and the game was certainly fun for the 20ish minutes of it I could play. |
