August 14, 2009 - Valve has revealed the third campaign for Left 4 Dead 2. Sort of. GTTV visited Valve recently and the segments aired last night. In them, Valve's Chet Faliszek discusses the third campaign, which does not have a formal name or tagline yet, but it does have a setting. It begins with a traffic jam as the players flee Savannah (the first campaign) and then the survivors battle their way to the "Whispering Oaks" fairgrounds, complete with tents and carnival rides.

Chet described the campaign as Valve's fantasy level, in a sense. You'll see all sorts of surreal things in the fairgrounds, such as the Merry-Go-Round spinning as the zombie horde attacks. It's unknown what the "uncommon common" zombie will be for this campaign (each Left 4 Dead 2 campaign has a custom zombie type associated with it; for more details read our previews on The Parish and Swamp Fever campaigns), though we're hoping for some kind of killer clowns.

We also managed to discover some new details about the game. Chronologically, Left 4 Dead 2 is set a few days after the first game. The survivors are Coach, a high school football coach who's the leader of the group; Rochelle, a techno fan/producer; Nick, the gambler and con man in his white suite; and Ellis, the good ol' garage mechanic.

Chet also mentioned there's a Katana sword now in the game for the new melee weapons, and that Valve is still working on some heavier melee weapons that will require bigger swings (making it a slower weapon). Another change is that Valve's original intention of having a mini-movie kick off each campaign has been toned down; now they're going to try and tell the story more throughout the campaign itself. The idea is to get players into the action faster.

Meanwhile, Chet also discussed the new add-on that was recently announced for the original Left 4 Dead. Crash Course is a two-map campaign designed mainly for Versus mode, though it supports all other modes. The idea is to create a streamlined Versus experience that runs about 30 minutes; currently, battling through a Versus campaign fully will about an hour or longer. Crash Course takes its name from the fact that it begins with a helicopter crash. Yes, it's the helicopter you boarded at the end of No Mercy. It turns out the pilot was infected and turning into a zombie, so the helicopter ride ends quickly as the craft crashes into the street.

There are numerous improvements to Versus mode in Crash Course, such as having all weapons and items spawn in the same spots for each team to level the playing field; currently, one team might get a lot of goodies while they play as humans, but when the teams switch sides the second team doesn't get those items, which means that the first team got an unfair advantage. Another detail we couldn't help but notice is the existence of some kind of howitzer on the level, which you can use to devastating effect. Chet reiterated that the add-on is free on the PC and available for a small fee (approximately $7) on the Xbox 360.

And in other news, Valve co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell wouldn't discuss Half-Life 2 Episode 3, other than to say that they're working on the game but aren't yet ready to talk about it.
